International StreetArt Festival
2019
WILHELMSHAVEN (DE)

In 2019, Wilhelmshaven celebrated not only the 9th edition of the International StreetArt Festival, but also the city's 150th anniversary. That year, the festival was expanded with a new element: city murals – large murals in public spaces.
For this expansion, the festival collaborated with Getting Up!, a foundation from Heerlen dedicated to urban art and culture. Through this collaboration, not only were temporary works created on the street, but also three permanent murals spread throughout the city. In this way, street art was given a visible and lasting place in Wilhelmshaven.
The project linked the energy of Heerlen's urban scene to the festival in Germany — where makers from both cities collaborated and shared their style and vision. The walls were painted on large façades and containers, transforming the city itself into an open-air gallery.
This collaboration highlighted the power of street art as a means to connect environments, make identity visible, and bring new stories to the city.
